Course Description

This course has two primary objectives:
- To learn the basics of recording, editing, and mixing using the industry standard Avid Pro Tools digital audio workstation software
- To develop the necessary skills required to complete a basic recording project using the Fairhaven Recording Studio.

Students will be expected to use and build off of knowledge gained in the Intro to Audio Recording course in regard to basic signal processing and basic recording techniques. This includes the use of basic analog mixing console functions, compressors and equalizers, patch bays, and dedicated audio interfaces. Students will take knowledge gained in the previous course and apply it to the digital realm while learning the specifics of recording audio and MIDI, editing, and mixing using Avid's Pro Tools DAW software. By the end of this course students should be able to complete a simple recording project on their own- from tracking and overdubbing, through editing and mixing.

Attendance: A thorough understanding of recording techniques takes time and frequent review. Please strive to be present and on time for every class meeting. If you are going to miss class coordinate with me to make up the work. If you miss 4 or more classes you need to check in with me, so we can agree on a plan in order for you to pass the class. It is up to you to schedule that check-in. If you’ve missed at least 4 classes and I don’t hear from you all quarter, then you will not be able to pass.

Student need to complete 3 bigger projects

  • Basic Voiceover Project – Students will record a brief voiceover using Pro Tools. These voiceovers will then be edited to remove breaths, pauses, and speaking errors. Total runtime should be no more than 4 minutes and no less than 2.
  • Raw Tracks Remix Project – Students will choose from a selection of professionally recorded multi-track recordings and utilize techniques learned in class to create their own mixes from scratch.
  • Creative Tracking Project – Students will create a unique piece of audio work. This does not have to be a song or music of any kind; the project could be a creative narration or an imaginary scene from a film. Online collaboration using Avid’s cloud project tools is recommended, but not required.
