Course Description

The primary goal of this course is for students to achieve competency in using all the standard tools used to produce quality recordings in a professional studio. In building on their experiences from the previous core classes of the Audio Technology, Music, and Society minor, students will continue to improve their understanding of and proficiency with large format mixing consoles, patchbays, Avid Pro Tools HD, microphone technique, signal flow, and gain staging, as well as the effective usage of signal processing in both mixing and recording.
In particular, this class will focus on the art of manipulating sound in creative ways; using technical knowledge to fuel and facilitate the aesthetic vision of a given sound recording project. Students will also work on developing the important “soft skills” of managing payment, client relations, and effective communication during recording sessions. We will also explore topics on how the modern recording industry functions and the studio’s place within modern popular culture.

Throughout the quarter students are expected to spend at least 30-40 hours working in the studio outside of class to complete the various projects associated with the course.

Students in this class will be responsible for creating their own self-directed recording projects with assistance and guidance provided by the instructor, so it is best if students come into this course with at least a vague idea of recording projects they might potentially take on.
