Course Description

*This is a student-taught course by Peter Wagner. Stan Tag is the faculty sponsor.

Whether it’s listening to a podcast, tuning in to terrestrial radio, or sitting in a circle and sharing stories out loud, we are constantly surrounded by examples of storytelling designed for the ear. Every one of us has a unique storytelling voice, and this course is an opportunity to explore writing and discussion that pushes you to discern that specific voice and write from it authentically, for the ear. What does your authentic voice sound like, and how is it different from your writing voice? This style might feel very different from your approach to writing essays, but is a beneficial skill to learn for any endeavor that requires telling a compelling story. What is that compelling story you have within you? In this class, we will explore the place of oral storytelling in our lives, interact with various techniques and approaches to writing for audio media, develop methods for identifying your own unique voice in this format, and work collaboratively on script writing and sound description projects to help develop and exercise that voice and your descriptive capability.
