Course Description

Despite shows such as Law and Order and Cops, there really are rules that police officers and prosecutors are expected to follow. We will look at how the prosecution of a case works, the nature of arrests, and the pesky meaning of the term “probable cause.” We will explore when you need a search warrant, when you do not, and the difference between searching a person, premises or vehicle. Let us not forget that debated exclusionary rule; if the police find incriminating evidence, should it be thrown out because they did it incorrectly? We will also take a hard look at the famous Miranda case, how it came about and what it means.
