Multicultural Counseling & Therapy
CRN
Course Number
Course Description
We continue to see individual and communal diversity increase in the U.S. and globally. Members of marginalized communities are raising their voices and sharing their narratives in efforts to raise our awareness and knowledge around their existence and the issues they face. This course aims to understand how helping professionals (e.g., counselors, therapists, social workers) can practice culturally competent approaches that best serve diverse populations. Through a critical multicultural lens, we will explore how to work with individuals across numerous dimensions of identity including (but not limited to) race, gender, sexuality, age, and ability. Furthermore, we will explore how to incorporate intersectionality into clinical practice. We will also discuss how common and popular treatment approaches (e.g., CBT) and assessment tools can be adapted to best serve marginalized populations.
