Fairhaven Narrative Evaluations

Fairhaven College classes do not use the A-to-F grading system. Students evaluate their own performance in detail for each Fairhaven college course. The student self-evaluation, combined with their faculty member's narrative assessment of the student's work, records the individual qualities of student academic performance in Fairhaven coursework.

Why evaluations instead of letter grades?

The ability to critique oneself fairly, candidly and helpfully is a valuable life-skill which students find to be an asset long after they leave college. Development of these skills is one of the reasons why Fairhaven requires self-evaluation instead of letter grades.

Academic Credit

Academic credit is granted after course requirements have been satisfactorily completed and the student has submitted the narrative self-evaluation to the faculty. Faculty respond with a written evaluation of the student's progress, and records credit award on a "Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory" basis. The student-faculty evaluation becomes part of the student's academic file, and forms part of the student's academic credentials.
