Description
The goal of Intro to Audio is to provide students with an understanding of the broad and specific concepts of recording audio, as well as a general understanding of the history of audio recording technology and its role in the creation of art and culture. Special importance is placed on developing a fundamental understanding of the core concepts of critical listening and signal flow. Upon completion of this course, each student should have the necessary skills to facilitate a basic recording session in the Fairhaven Recording Studio. This class should not only prepare you to record projects in the second audio class (FAIR 370I) but also broaden your appreciation for the art and science of audio recording.

Credit/Evaluation
Students will complete the following assignments to receive credit in the course:
Reading Assignments: Each reading will have a brief open-book online response associated with it on canvas. Reading assignments will be accepted late, but you must score at least 60% on the reading assignments to receive credit for this course.
Critical Listening: One of the course's key objectives is to develop your critical listening abilities. There are four assignments throughout the quarter that will work towards developing your ear, but you will also be expected to continue this practice regularly and share examples in class.
Discussion Posts: There are several important topics that we will not have time to cover during in-class lectures so instead these will be addressed through online discussion posts via Canvas. Sometimes we will also use these posts to start a discussion that will be continued in class.
Final Exam: The final for the class is a hands-on skills demonstration in the recording studio. You must score at least 70% on the final to receive credit for this course.
Attendance:
A thorough understanding of recording techniques takes time and frequent review. Please strive to be present and on time for every class meeting. If you are going to miss class coordinate with me to make up the work. If you miss 4 or more classes, check in with me so we can agree on a plan for you to pass the class. It is up to you to schedule that check-in. If you have missed 4 or more classes and I do not hear from you all quarter, then you will not be able to pass.
Lab Structure:
This class has a crucial lab component. Students will meet with the instructor or a qualified student lab instructor to practice the specific recording techniques required to pass this class. Labs will meet in the Fairhaven Studio (FC 108) and will last for 6 weeks. The Final Exam will be based closely on the lab work.
