Description
This is an art studio course with hands-on making components, as well as discussion about what drawing is and how we use it. The course will explore the purposes and methods for drawing, from sketches and experiments, to fine art, and the many other cultural and technical applications. We will do some reading, listening and writing in this course to explore concepts, methodologies, and applications of drawing as a form of interpretation and translation in various disciplines and informal uses. You do not need any experience in art or drawing, and no pre-existing ability to do “representational drawing” (drawing an image that looks realistically like the subject) will be necessary for this class.
Students will be required to purchase some art materials for this class. These will likely include paper, drawing utensils, erasers, brushes, or other materials for mark-making, and may include others as desired by the student.

FAIR 202a or equivalent, or instructor permission

Credit/Evaluation
S/NX grading; narrative evaluation required for credit.
Artistic assignments will consist of a series of prompts or parameters for each drawing assignment, which will be done both in and out of class time. Some drawings will be made with art materials and others through unconventional means and non-art materials. Ex: Make a drawing using the weather. Some drawings may be made individually with room for interpretation of the assignment, and others may be made collectively, such as collective drawing exercises with small group or even entire class participation.
Assignments will also include reading texts, listening/viewing other reference material, and writing about these in the form of journaling or personal essay writing, or drawing about them, and then participating in classroom discussion about them.
