Course Description

This course is the Senior year capstone for the Law, Diversity & Justice curriculum and requires a significant amount of engagement and work in and outside of class. The course takes an advanced approach to persuasive legal writing, open-ended legal research, legal analysis, and persuasive oral argument to solve legal problems and advocate on behalf of a client. Students build upon legal research, writing and analysis skills developed in earlier stages of the Law, Diversity & Justice curriculum, in order to prepare for law-related careers, admission to law school, other law-related graduate programs, and career trajectories that may benefit from an interdisciplinary understanding of legal advocacy and communication techniques. This course centers on two projects, which include (1) researching and writing an appellate brief; and (2) developing and presenting an oral argument to a panel of judges (known as a “Moot Court” exercise) based upon the appellate brief.
