Mixed & Multi-Media Art
CRN
Course Number
Course Description
Materials Fee: $28.00 Note: This is an upper-division studio art course that requires previous experience with artmaking.
With the ground-breaking developments of photography, cinema and sound recording, the traditional disciplines of Painting and Sculpture began to lose their dominance in the late 20th Century. Artists began incorporating everyday objects, as well as photography, video, performance, and audio into artworks and installations to develop a more relevant and revolutionary expression. These experiments and ideas continue to influence contemporary art today. Students will plan and create 4 art projects experimenting with a wide variety of materials.
Students are encouraged to combine their art with ideas and issues they are learning about in other classes. Students will present their artwork to the class and write an artist statement for each project. Art projects will be displayed when possible. The course will also introduce students to numerous artists working within the field of mixed and multi-media art. Students are expected to work both during and after class, to keep a sketch/notebook of no fewer that 40 pages, and give an oral presentation on an artist working with similar methods and concepts.
Prereq: At least one 200-level studio art course, and 202a or equivalent. Credit/Evaluation: Credit will be based upon regular attendance, quality of coursework, adherence to project due dates, and informed and consistent class participation.
