Course Description

This is an introduction to the history and experience of Asians in America. This class will explore the factors for immigration, working and living conditions of Asian laborers in this country, and the social relations between the minority and majority, as well as those between the various Asian ethnic groups. Lectures, the readings, creative projects and documentary films will help illuminate the trials, tribulations, and the resilience of Asians on these shores.

Please note that the pages assigned in the syllabus are based on the 2015 edition of the book, if you have a different version, you need to see me as soon as possible. - Articles on Canvas and on-line through Wilson Library database

Credit/Evaluation

1. Every week there will be a quiz on the lectures and films. These quizzes will consist of ten multiple-choice questions and each question is worth one point. This will be an online assignment. These quizzes constitute 20% of your grade. 2. Weekly discussions. These discussions will be on the weekly readings. These discussions will be held in-class every Thursday for roughly 20-25 minutes; your participation helps create a critical dialogue about the readings and deepen student learning. These discussions constitute 15% of your grade 3. For the midterm, you will create a Fact Sheet on any event, movement, era, location, community, individual or group; it is your choice. You must use 3-5 sources. The fact sheet constitutes 30% of your grade 4. For the final, you will create a Poster on a specific research question, thesis and/or “burning issue.” This is not a fact sheet, it is a poster of your research on a specific question/thesis of your choice. You must use 5-10 sources for this project. This assignment constitutes 35% of your grade
