Course Description

The primary goal of this course is for students to achieve competency in using all the standard tools used to produce quality recordings in a professional studio. In building on their experiences from the previous core classes of the Audio Technology, Music, and Society minor, students will continue to improve their understanding of and proficiency with large format mixing consoles, patch bays, Avid Pro Tools HD, microphone technique, signal flow, and gain staging, as well as the effective usage of signal processing in both mixing and recording. Students will also work on developing the important "soft skills" of managing payment, client relations, and effective communication during recording sessions. We will also explore topics on how the modern recording industry functions and the studio's place within modern popular culture. Students are expected to spend at least 30-40 hours working in the studio outside of class to complete the various recording and mixing projects throughout the quarter. Texts: Various online readings provided by the instructor. Credit/Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their attendance/attentiveness during class, completion of lab exercises, and their work on recording projects.
