Course Description

This class is designed for students with little or no prior drawing experience, but can accommodate advanced drawing students willing to challenge themselves and hone their existing skills. All projects and exercises will emphasize drawing from "nature", tangible objects, and/or actual people, instead of from one's imagination. Various observational exercises will contribute to improved and refined rendering skills and the ability to create the illusion of three dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. Throughout the quarter lessons in basic design principles, color theory and draftsmanship will be explored, as well as experimental drawing exercises to challenge traditional standards and parameters about what constitutes a "good" drawing. As the quarter progresses, students will be encouraged to take risks, allow for mistakes, and experiment with non-traditional methods. Students are expected to try various kinds of materials such as charcoal, pencil, pastel, conte crayon, and markers while still focusing on skill development. Students will work both inside and outside of class time on their projects and sketchbooks. A materials list will be emailed to students two weeks before class starts.

Text: no text required, however students are required to research several artist drawings over the internet.
